Hollande hosts Oceania delegation ahead of COP21

French President François Hollande hosted on Thursday morning a France-Oceania summit ahead of the Climate Change conference next week. He intended to reassure the small-island states in frontline of climate disruption.

“You are better placed than others to meet the threat of climate change,” Hollande said as the Climate Change Conference was at the forefront of the debates.

The agreement “should enable us to limit global warming under 2° Celsius by the end of the century”, Hollande added.

“You won’t just be satisfied with a watered-down agreement, real commitments have to be made, with temperatures compatible with the development of your territories,” Hollande concluded.

About 12 heads of states and regional governments attended the summit. Amongst them, delegations of New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna, Melanesian, Polynesian and Micronesian island states.

These small-island states are affected by the rising sea level and more and more violent cyclones.

Hollande has also fully supported New Caledonia and French Polynesia’s requests to become full members of the next Pacific Islands Forum.

“It will be a good opportunity for us, not to back off, but to even commit more through the Pacific Fund,” Hollande said.

This is the fourth France-Oceania summit since 2009.
