Monday is France’s 29th Fête de la Musique, and towns all over France – and the world – are getting ready for 24 hours of non-stop music in houses, cars, trees, trains, boxes, boats, but mainly the streets. The minister of culture, Frédéric Mitterrand, was in charge of this year’s theme. It is la musique au féminin.

La Fête de la Musique was started in 1982 by then Minister of Culture Jack Lang. Maurice Fleuret, appointed director of music and dance in 1981, and Lang shared the view that music should be everywhere, concerts nowhere, so they launched the first Fête de la Musique on the summer solstice 1982.
