This week’s question was read on 20 November, and was about Italian politics. At that time, there was a lot of turmoil in the country due to the economic crisis - Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was forced to step down, and Italy’s president Giorgio Napolitano had just appointed a new Prime Minister.
My question to you was: what is the name of Italy’s new Prime Minister?
And the answer is: Mario Monti. Monti is a well-respected economist, and most of the country’s political parties, including Silvio Berlusconi's, approved his nomination. He introduced a 59.8 billion euro austerity package; it’s a mixture of spending cuts and tax rises, with the aim of balancing the budget by 2014. Measures include sales of state property, a freeze on public-sector salaries until 2014, and measures to fight widespread tax evasion.
The winners this week are: Mr. Jean Forget of Attleboro, Massachusetts; Ralph Okhiria, from Kano State, Nigeria; Robert Ibari from Nairobi, Kenya; Arif Bankapur, from the Bellary Radio Listener’s Club in Karnataka, India, and last but not least, Sultana Begum, from Sirajganj, Bangladesh.
This week’s question is a cultural one, about Chinese New Year – festivities are underway right now. Which animal is the symbol for this year? 2012 is the Chinese Year of the … ?
