Akhenaton, the charismatic leader of the band I AM from Marseille, is one of the oldest and most respected voices on the French rap scene. For the last 25 years he’s embodied a socially aware and learned form of hip hop, defying anyone who thought rap would be a flash in the pan. After the recent release of his fifth solo album Je suis en vie (I’m still alive), he talks to RFI about the complexities of rap, why you’ve got to keep travelling and the dangers of turning into ultra-liberal delinquants in our money-obsessed society.
