France celebrates Pierre Boulez, pope of the avant garde

Issued on:

French musician Pierre Boulez is one of the greatest living classical composers. With 27 Grammy Awards to his name, that's more than Michael Jackson or Stevie Wonder. And while he's conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, he's had a more conflictual relationship with his native France. To mark his 90th birthday, the new Philharmonie de Paris is running a major exhibition showing a warmer, generous side to the enfant terrible of avant garde music. In particular it shows how much his composition owes to non-musicians such as painter Paul Klee and poet Stéphane Mallarmé.
