Hello everyone!

Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday, at 6:15, 6:45, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.

Fabulous news! We have a shortwave frequency again! It’s 13725 kHz on the 22m band, and you can hear us between 6.00 and 7.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Cuba, Denmark, India, Indonesia, Japan, Latvia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Peru, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know … and be sure and send us your reception reports. Maybe we can get more time, which would be wonderful.

This week’s quiz: On 22 August, I asked you a question about Madras Day in India, which our friends in Chennai – formerly called Madras - were celebrating. You were to write in with the year the city of Madras/Chennai was founded.

The answer is: 1639.

Madras Day is celebrated on 22 August every year, and the festivities last for about a week. In 1639, the British East India Company built Fort St George, which was the nucleus of the modern city Chennai, and is now the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

The winners this week are: Hena Rani Sarkar, from Murshidabad, India, and Ralf Urbanczyk, from Eisleben, Germany – both RFI Listeners Club members; Ferhat Bezazel, the president of the RFI Club Ain Kechera in Ain Kechera, Algeria; Dr D W Nabi from Middlesex, UK, and Rabeya Begam, from Lalmonirhat, Bangladesh.

Congratulations winners!
