Drivers in France are starting to get nervous about petrol supplies as a strike by workers at French oil giant Total's six refineries drags on and other companies are joining in. Strikers are fighting the company's decision to shut down its refinery in the Channel coast town of Dunkirk. The oil industry says it has too much capacity, as demand for petrol goes down, spurred by government policies to reduce consumption. The French goverment is pushing Total to resolve the situation, but even if the company finds a solution, the shift in oil consumption worldwide means problems like this will become more and more frequent.
