Avolon confirmed the order on Thursday, upping its initial offer, made at the UK’s Farnborough airshow, to buy 15 planes.

“When a company as dynamic as Avolon decides to order more planes than initially planned, it is a recognition of the excellent value of our products,” Airbus’s customer relations chief John Leahy said in a statement.

Indonesian private carrier Lion Air is reported to have ordered 220 A320neos, boosting the company’s in its battle with rival Boeing.

The A320neo is Airbus’s star product and boasts innovative features that have reduced fuel consumption by 15 per cent.

Some 8,900 have been ordered and more than 5,300 have already been delivered to more than 380 customers.
