Created a year ago with the merger of two transport firms Mory and Ducros, the new company had financial problems and lost about 80 million euros in the last 16 months.

The biggest bankruptcy is France's biggest since President François Hollandewas elected in May 2012 and the most devastating for jobs since household-goods maker Moulinex closed shop in 2001, leading to 5,500 workers losing their jobs.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault pledged to go all out to save the company.

"We will look for possible solutions for each and every site with social actors," he said after the news was announced. "Wherever we can find buyers, everything will be done to save the maximum number of jobs."
