Could bamboo be a useful source of energy in Africa? Researchers say it could replace wood for making charcoal.They say it could slow down deforestation because it takes up to 10 tons of wood to produce one ton of wood charcoal. Initial successes with bamboo charcoal in Ethiopia and Ghana are spurring interest in this so-called "green biofuel", says Michael Kwaku, of the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan in Ghana.
