20 per cent rise in petrol prices as Ghana cuts subsidies

Issued on:

A decision by Ghana's government to cut the country's fuel subsidies at the weekend has led to a 20 per cent jump in the price of petrol. Authorities say the move was necessary because the country was running a deficit of over 12 per cent of GDP, nearly twice the government target of 6.7 per cent set last July. Nana Ampofo, is a Ghana analyst at the Songhai Advisory in London. He said the government's decision could cause discontent within the country, but says that the situation was untenable.
