Cameroon gay-rights lawyer speaks

Issued on:

Two Cameroonian men, who were convicted of being gay and later released, are back in custody. Police detained them after an angry mob attacked them in a Yaoundé marketplace. Jonas Singa Kumie and Franky Djome were dressed in women’s clothes when shoppers assaulted them on Sunday. One of their lawyers, Alice Nkom, is a well-known gay rights activist. Nkom, the first African woman to have become a lawyer in Cameroon, is in Paris as a guest of the French government. Cameroonian society used to be more tolerant, she says.
