Namibian cricketer dies aged 25 after match collapse

A young cricketer described as "a tremendous asset" has died following a stroke during a game in South Africa's domestic one-day championship. Namibia's Raymond van Schoor, 25, collapsed while batting on Sunday against Free State and after being taken to hospital, where he was in critical condition with swelling on the brain, died five days later.

The wicket-keeper batsman was 15 not out when he complained of dizziness during the 50-over clash, which Namibia went on to win after he had retired hurt.

After taking a sip of water he fell into a teammate's arms and was then transferred to intensive care by ambulance.

Van Schoor made his debut aged 17 in 2007 and was Player of the Tournament in qualifying for the ICC World T20 three years ago. He was also named Cricketer of the Year in his country in 2012.

Cricket Namibia President Richard Frankle is devastated at the loss:

"Raymond was a tremendous asset to Cricket Namibia and the national cricket teamn he said. "He was taken far too early from us but we accept that Almighty God needed him to represent the heavenly angels - may his soul rest in peace!"

South Africa internationals AB de Villers and Vernon Philander both posted tributes on social media.

"Sad news, thoughts and prayers are with family, friends and team mates," wrote De Villiers.

Thoughts echoed by Philander:

"Sad news for the cricket family losing Raymond Van Schoor," he declared. "My thoughts and prayers are with you family, friends and Namibian cricket, rest in peace."
