One more dead in fresh Haiti rioting

Fresh rioting in Haiti on Wednesday has led to another fatality during a clash with UN forces, reports say. The incident occurred on the third day of violent demonstrations over an outbreak of cholera that has killed 1,100 people.

A man was shot dead and several others injured in further protests in northern Haiti, the first area of the outbreak. There are growing fears the epidemic could kill as many as 10,000 people.

Reports are unclear as to whether the man was a UN peacekeeper, a member of the Haitian police, or a protester.

Officials say the number of people hospitalised with cholera has reached 18,382.

"Our projections show that we could have around 200,000 cases of infection in Haiti over the next six to 12 months," Pan-American Health Organisation regional advisor Ciro Ugarte told AFP.

Aid workers say protests were holding up relief operations in the second city of Cap Haitien.

Two Haitians were killed in riots there on Monday, with one shot by a UN peacekeeper as protesters set a police station and vehicles ablaze and threatened to torch a UN compound.

Isolated cholera cases have been found in the Dominican Republic, and as far away as the southern US state of Florida.
