Argentina's Pablo Trapero to chair 2014 Cannes Un Certain Regard jury

Argentinean scriptwriter, producer and director Pablo Trapero will chair the jury of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard selection. The 20-odd films shown in the outside-competition event will be announced, along with the films in competition, on 17 April.

Trapero said he was "very proud" to chair the jury, in a statement issued by festival organisers.

"Un Certain Regard, where I have presented three of my films, is always a very exciting selection,"he is quoted as saying. "It brings us grand masters, promising young talent, new countries and new forms of cinema.”

Born in Argentina in 1971, Trapero's first feature film, Mundo Grúa (Crane World) received the Critics’ Award at the 1999 Venice Film Festival.

His three films to be selected for Un Certain Regard are El Bonaerense in 2008, Carancho in 2010 and Elefante blanco (White Elephant) in 2012.

His second film, Leonera, was selected in 2002 at the Cannes Festival.

"Each of Pablo Trapero’s films portrays a harsh social reality in an almost documentary style, through a plot that is akin to a thriller and offers an uncompromising look at contemporary political issues," the festival statement says.

Franco-Cambodian film L'Image manquante (The Missing Picture), by Rithy Panh, won the Certain Regard award in 2013.

The jury was chaired by Danish scriptwriter and producer Thomas Vinterberg.
