Iran upgrades centrifuges to improve uranium enrichment

Iran says it has begun installing new “better quality and speed” centrifuges to enrich uranium in defiance of international demands to halt its nuclear activities.

Teheran says it has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency of the move and they have full supervision of the centrifuges.

“They are fully aware that Iran’s peaceful nuclear activity continues to progress,” said foreign minister spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast. “This is another confirmation of the Islamic republic’s successful stride in its nuclear activities.”

In June, Iran’s nuclear chief Fereydoun Abbasi Davani announced Iran would expand its production of 20 per cent enriched uranium and move the work to an enrichment site some 150 kilometres south of Teheran.

Despite being targeted by four sets of UN Security Council sanctions over its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment, Iran remains adamant that it will push ahead with the programme.

The West accuses Tehran of seeking to build a bomb under the guise of a civilian power programme, a charge which Iran strongly denies.
