Depardieu puts Paris mansion on sale for millions

French film star Gérard Depardieu has put a Paris mansion up for sale for millions of euros, days after it was revealed that he has moved to Belgium to dodge tax hikes. He is due to appear before magistrates in January for drink-driving after falling off his scooter in a Paris street.

Depardieu put his mansion in the swish Saint-German-des-Prés neighbourhood on the market three months ago, according to Le Parisien newspaper.

The asking price is 50 million euros, the daily says, although the estate agent has made no statement on the matter.

Depardieu owns several businesses in the street and reportedly wanted to convert the building into a luxury hotel.

The government has been angered by the news that the world-famous actor has moved to Estaimpuis, a town just over the Belgian border where 2,800 other wealthy French citizens live, to avoid its 75 per cent tax rate for incomes over a million euros.

Depardieu, who has hit the headlines before for drink-related excesses such as urinating in an airplane, is to appear before Paris magistrates on 8 January for drink-driving.

Police say that he was picked up after falling from his scooter on 29 November and was found to be more than three times over the alcohol limit.

He can be fined up to 4,500 euros, lose six points on their licence and/or jailed for up to two years.
