A smiling Strauss-Kahn, in regulation bow tie and black suit, posed for photographers on

the red carpet on Saturday along with Myrian L'Aouffir, who gossip magazines say is his new girlfriend after the break-up of his marriage with former TV journalist Anne Sinclair.

The couple attended a showing of Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers left alive, according to festival organisers.

They arrived shortly after French film star Alain Delon, who was set to view a restored version of René Clément's Plein Soleil (Purple Noon), the 1960 film that launched his career.

The trailer for Abel Ferrara's film Welcome to New York appeared on the internet on the first day of this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Starring Gérard Depardieu, it is based on the scandal that ended Strauss-Kahn's career at the IMF and wrecked his hopes of becoming French president in last year's election.
