Europe squabbles after Greek aid released
Eurozone finance ministers have released urgent aid to save Greece from imminent bankruptcy. Behind the scenes there has been disagreement over a second bailout for the country.
Issued on:
Once the Greek parliament passed tough austerity measures at the end of the week, all roads were clear for European Union approval of this new round of urgent aid.
Now on the agenda is what comes next. What kind of new bailout Greece will get in the coming weeks?
Poland, which has taken over the rotating presidency of the European Union, says that the eurozone's plans for troubled economies do not go far enough.
And Warsaw has criticised the reluctance of the richer countries of northern Europe to help their neighbours to the south.
The size of a new bailout for Greece could be decided as early as next week.
But negotiatons are trickier this time around since some governments, including Germany, want private investors to share the pain. Under the scheme private investors would buy new bonds to replace those that are about to mature.
