South western France still on alert after weekend floods

Southwestern France is on alert for further heavy rain this week, following a weekend which left large parts of the region under water. Hundred of roads are flooded and another dozen homes were evacuated on Sunday night.

A flood alert is still in place for three areas: the Landes, Lot-et-Garonne and Tarn-et-Garonne and the national and local weather forecast service is predicting more heavy rain up to Wednesday in the south-west region.

High winds are expected on the coast near Aquitaine, with gust of wind up to 100 km/h on Tuesday night and waves measuring 3 to 7 metres high on the coast.

In Brittany, a 10-year-old girl was swept away while she was horse riding by a swollen river near Rennes on Saturday. Rescuers later found her body on a river bank. Meanwhile in the Alps, two people were killed over the weekend in avalanches.

More than a week after devastating floods left much of the south east washed out, the region is still trying to recover.

80 families had to leave their homes and 340 companies had to halt their activities.

The regional council has three million euros available to help with the cost of repairs.
