Canadian Psycho to be extradited after arrest in Berlin

The German authorities say it could take several days to arrange the extradition to Canada of a man dubbed the ‘Canadian Psycho’ after he was arrested on Monday in an internet café in the German capital Berlin.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, a 29-year-old, porn actor, is suspected of dismembering a Chinese student and filming the grisly killing.

Police had carried out a day’s long global manhunt for Magnotta that started in Montreal and shifted to Paris before finally ending in Berlin.

A Berlin police spokesman described the arrest saying “at 1.30 pm a witness stopped a police car in the Karl Marx Strasse and said that he had recognized a criminal in an internet café… officers then went directly to the café”.

Magnotta is said to have put up little resistance to his arrest and said simply “you got me”.

Interpol had issued a Red Notice wanted-persons alert for Magnotta, also known as Eric Clinton Newman and Vladimir Romanov, to its 190 member countries after a video allegedly showing the gruesome murder surfaced online.

The murder first came to light when police in Canada said that a human foot had been sent to the headquarters of the country’s ruling Conservative Party. A hand was later found in the mail at an Ottawa post office and a torso was discovered in a pile of rubbish near Magnotta’s apartment in Montreal.

Magnotta arrived in France on 26 May where police traced him to a hotel in the Parisian suburb of Bagnolet. The hunt then turned to an international bus station in Paris on Monday.

French police said he left France on Thursday on a bus heading for Germany.

He is due to appear before a judge on Tuesday.
