Hollande calls for Gaza ceasefire
French President Francois Hollande has called for a ceasefire in Gaza that is now needed "more than ever" to end the "suffering of civilians".

Hollande was speaking at a World War I commemoration ceremony in Alsace on the border between France and Germany.
The French president added that "the history of France and Germany demonstrates that the will can always triumph over fate and that people who were regarded as enemies can be reconciled in a few years."
Hollande attended the ceremony with his German counterpart Joachim Gauck.
A number of protests took place in France against Israel’s offensive in the Gaza strip this weekend.
On Saturday thousands of people took to the streets in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Lille, and other French cities to voice their support for the Palestinians.
On Sunday afternoon, the French Union of Jewish Students are planning to join Muslim groups for a Israel-Palestine peace rally in Paris.
France hosts the largest Muslim and Jewish communities in Western Europe with around five million Muslims and half a million Jews.
