Gauck, a Lutheran pastor, was to address the 1,400 people invited, including 500 family members and friends, in an ecumenical service in the historic Cologne cathedral.

Carsten Spohr, the boss of Lufthansa and Germanwings, its low-cost arm, was also in attendance.

Company personnel were asked not to wear their uniforms.

The ceremony was broadcast live on several German TV networks.
