The research published on Wednesday found that French workers spend on average 57 minutes per work day on non-professional Internet use.

Personal Internet use was found to make up 59 per cent of the total time employees use the web and accounted for a 13.6 per cent productivity loss.

The use included news and social networking sites at the start of the day, television episodes, radio and online games at lunch and traffic, weather and entertainment sites before leaving the office.

The study carried out in 2012 was based on 100 firms with 800,000 employees by Internet filtering software company, Olfeo.
