Anti-fascist march remembers student activist Clément Méric killed last year

More than a thousand people took to the streets on Saturday in Paris to mark one year since 19-year old student and left-wing activist Clément Méric was killed during an altercation with right-wing skinheads in a central Paris shopping district.

Anti-fascist campaigners, many whose faces were concealed behind scarves, hoods or dark glasses, organised the march from Paris’ Place de la Bastille to Gambetta in the east of the capital.

While the event honoured the memory of Méric, many came out to show their opposition to the National Front party.

Méric died on 5 June in the hospital after a brawl between a group of skinheads and left-wing activists, sending shockwaves throughout the country.

Méric, who was a student at Sciences Po University, participated in demonstrations for left-wing causes.

Politicians from across the political spectrum condemned his killing, and the French government moved to ban several right-wing parties after his death.
