In a statement, Dalil Boubaker called for “a moment of contemplation and solidarity in front of the Paris Mosque … to denounce the barbaric and bloody horror of terrorists who, in the name of a deadly ideology, pervert Islam and its values.”

“It is an ideology against which all the Muslim community rises up with great force”, he added.

The main organisation representing Muslims in France, the CFCM, yesterday issued a condemnation of the decapitation of Hervé Gourdel by Algerian jihadists inspired by the Islamic State armed group.

Ten days ago, several Muslim groups in France signed a joint communiqué denouncing the violent actions of IS.

In the southern Riviera city of Nice, where Gourdel grew up, flags are flying at half-mast.

The UMP mayor, Christian Estrosi told reporters he had met Gourdel’s family late on Wednesday and that they had reacted “with dignity, anger and an unspeakable pain.”
