Police officer killed, man injured in new Paris shooting, no Charlie Hebdo link established

A police officer has died and a council worker was seriously injured after a man opened fire on them on the outskirts of Paris on Thursday morning. It was unclear whether there was any link to Wednesday’s killings at Charlie Hebdo satirical paper.

The woman police officer shot in the incident died after being rushed to hospital after the shooting on Thursday morning.

A local council employee was reported to be seriously injured.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve visited the scene of the latest shooting in Montrouge just south of Paris at 9.30am on Thursday.

A 52-year-old man wearing a bullet-proof vest and in possession of a firearm and a knife was detained, according to police sources.

Shortly after 8.00am he shot the police officer in the back as she and her colleagues were dealing with a traffic accident.

With a manhunt under way for the killers of 12 people at the premises of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, no link had been established with that incident at 10.00am Thursday.

An explosion occurred early Thursday at a kebab shop near a mosque in the eastern French town of Villefranche-sur-Saone, officials said.

There were no casualties and it was reported to be a criminal act.

No link to the Charlie Hebdo killings had been established on Thursday morning.

Shots were fired at Muslim religious buildings in the southern Aude region and in Le Mans in the west overnight. 

Nobody was injured.
