The man went off the road on a corner and crashed into a wall in Tourrettes-sur-Loup, inland from Nice, they said.

A helicopter was sent to take him to hospital but he died of his injuries.

Ironman competitions are an extreme form of the triathlon.

The event in Nice involved a 3.8km swim, a 180km cycle and a 42km running marathon.
