BMW win gives Day golf's number 1 spot

Australia’s Jason Day knocked Rory McIlroy off his perch as the world's best golfer Sunday, grabbing the number one ranking with a six-shot victory at the BMW Championships at Conway Farms.

The 27-year-old claimed his fifth win of the season with a final round of 69 to finish on 22 under par.

This positions him on top of the FedEx Cup playoff standings, and within reach of the 10-million-dollar (8.9-million-euro) playoff bonus at the PGA Tour Championship.

Day becomes the third man in three weeks to claim the number one ranking, after Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy traded the top spot.

Afterwards, he told journalists the feat had been anything but easy, and it was a dream he'd had since childhood.

"It's been very, very difficult for me to try and downplay getting to number one, because I've really wanted to reach this goal for a long time now," he said.

The top spot comes after Day broke through to lift his major first at Whistling Straits in August.
