French director Laurent Witz and Alexandre Espigares from Luxembourg jointly accepted the Academy Award, voicing surprise.
"I didn't expect to get an Oscar" said Witz, "my house is so small but I will find some room for it! I feel it’s an American dream and thank you Mr. Hublot for making this dream become reality!"
The film tells the story of Mr Hublot, part man-part robot, who lives in a retro-futuristic world, where characters are made of mechanical parts. The arrival of a robot dog, Robo Pet, a somewhat invasive companion, turns his life upside down.
The production took several years to make, but the two creators said they are already working on "a new project, a long animated movie for TV broadcasters."
"Mr Hublot" is the second Franco-Luxembourger short film to be rewarded at the Academy. In 2010, "Logorama" won the prize, beating another French movie "French Roast" by O. Joubert.
