The west of France could face storms as heavy as storm Xynthia, which killed 30 people in 2010 on Thursday night, forecasters warn. Wind and rain have deprived 10,000 households of electricity already this week.

A private agency, Agate France, has warned that strong winds, like those that hit the country in 2010 are likely to strike again.

But official weather service Météo France said Wednesday it was too early to confirm the prediction.

It warned of winds of up to 130 km per hour off the Brittany coast, saying they could mean huge waves, flooding of coastal areas and putting the area on orange alert.

People are advised to abstain from watersports in the sea and owners of pleasure boats are advised to check their moorings.

Brittany and French Basque Country have been lashed by storms since Monday, leading to power being cut off from 10,000 homes.

An old age pensioner died after being swept away by a wave in the Basque Country town of Hendaye on Monday.
