Old man winter makes an early appearance in France
Just days before Halloween, the first snowfall has already touched down in France late Friday night and early this morning.
Issued on:
The first flakes of snow were seen this morning in Alsace and Vosges, in the north-eastern part of the country. According to Metéo-France, snowfall is also expected this weekend in the southern Mediterranean island of Corsica, in the eastern region of Jura, Massif Central, and in the northern Alps.
Already, a warning has been issued to drivers in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region to be cautious when driving in such snowy conditions.
“Temperatures are expected to drop by ten degrees celsius, after two to three and up to four to five centimeters of snow in the higher regions of Ubaye and Haut Verdon” warned police.
In the Alps, the first snowfall is expected late Saturday night until Sunday morning, with temperatures deemed “exceptionally cold”.
“We will have temperatures liken to January, which won’t surpass three to five degrees celsius and will drop down to minus one”.
At the same time, Metéo-France has also issued a warning for the Mediterranean areas of a strong and violent wind, known locally as the Mistral. People have been warned to avoid going into the sea.
This latest round of freakish weather seems to be in tune to the already sparse summer experience in the northern half of France, whereby the average daily high was ten degrees lower than normal.
