Germans among eight militants killed by US drone

Eight militants, including five German nationals, have been killed in a US drone attack in Pakistan. Two missiles were fired at a house owned by a local tribesman in North Waziristan, the tribal belt where Western intelligence has traced an alleged plot to attack targets in Europe.

"Five German rebels of Turkish origin and three local militants were killed in the strike," a Pakistani security official said.

The attack took place in Mir Ali Bazaar, 20 kilometres east of Miranshah, the main town bordering Afghanistan.

It came hours after Japan and Sweden joined Washington and London in issuing an alert warning of a possible Al-Qaeda strike against their citizens travelling in Europe.

North Waziristan is a reputed hideout for militants linked to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Washington has branded the rugged tribal area the most dangerous place on earth.

US channel Fox News said militants had a list of targets in France and Germany, including Paris's Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral, Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, the city's central railway station and the Alexanderplatz TV tower.

The information was reportedly provided by a German national interrogated at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan.

Pakistani officials have reported that at least 21 US drone strikes in September killed around 120 people, the highest monthly toll for the attacks.
