More than 100 angry Ryanair passengers, who were headed for France, staged a sit-in on a plane in the dark on Tuesday, after it landed in Liège in southern Belgium. The passengers refused to leave the cabin after they were diverted to the Belgian airport.
The Ryanair flight left Morocoo three hours late at around 7.15pm local time. It had been due to land at Beauvais, near Paris, but the airport had closed down due to fog, so they were taken to Liège instead.
On landing the passengers refused to leave, and as it was late at night the pilot and crew left them on the plane.
“People are obviously outraged. I’m just trying to look out for their well-being,” said a local firefighter as he tried to persuade them to move to an airport waiting lounge.
“The plane didn’t land in Beauvais, but in Liège without warning us. Consequently, we refused to leave the plane”, said one passenger.
Ryanair says four planes had to be diverted to Liège during the day and that all the other passengers peacefully got onto buses to take them to Beauvais.
“This is clearly a case of unreasonable behaviour by a minority of passengers,” said a Ryanair spokesman.
The passengers were eventually taken by bus to Beauvais.
