Last month, two Croatian generals were acquitted of Balkans war crimes at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, after appeal. Judges ordered the release of Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac. Last year, the tribunal had sentenced Gotovina to 24 years in prison and Markac to 18 years for crimes committed during Operation Storm in 1995. The decision has opened old wounds.
