French police release picture of key witness in British Iraqi family Alps murder

French police investigating the shooting of a family in the Alps last year have released an identikit image of a mysterious motorcyclist said to have been at the scene of the crime.

The motorcyclist is the main witness and a potential suspect in the Annecy murders.

In September 2012, 50 year old British-Iraqi Saad al-Hilli, his wife and his mother-in-law were found dead with gunshot wounds to their heads inside their car at Chevaline near Lake Annecy, a popular tourist spot.

A cyclist, Sylvain Mollier, who French police believe was probably a collateral victim, was also gunned down.

Park rangers from the area spoke to the biker shortly before the shooting was discovered.

Investigators are hoping to track the man down because of the rare type of helmet he was wearing. Only 8,000 were made in the colour seen by the witnesses.

It is a full face model which opens from the side so the wearer can talk without removing it.

“It’s the kind of motorbike helmet that is interesting, more so than the identikit image in itself,” chief investigator Benoit Vinneman said.
