French police clear 600 migrants from Calais camps

Police cleared out 600 migrants from a food handout centre and three squats in the northern port of Calais on Wednesday.

Officials said 610 migrants, including 121 children, were evacuated on a court order, over sanitary conditions in the centre.

They will be questioned and their cases examined individually.

Many of them came from countries affected by conflict, such asIraq, Syria, Afghanistan and Sudan.

They were, hoping to hide in trucks leaving Calais to cross the channel to Britain.

French police have been trying for years to dislodge migrant camps in and around Calais.

Calais-based migrant rights activist Philippe Wannesson told RFI that " many of the people have been placed in detention centres, and are facing deportation proceedings."
