Former French spy Maurice Dufresse was placed under formal investigation on Wednesday night for revealing state secrets in his memoir. Dufresse is better known under the name Pierre Siramy, under which he published his book 25 ans dans les services secrets (25 years in the Secret Service).

Dufresse, a former DGSE official, was taken in for questioning on Tuesday from his home in Saint-Lo, northern France.

He caused a stir last month when he claimed that 24-year-old university researcher Clotilde Reiss, who was put on trial in Iran for spying, had in fact worked as "a contact" for French intelligence.

French Defence Minister Herve Morin filed a complaint against the author of 25 ans dans les services secrets when it was published in March.
