The French official who was accused of making racist comments while in charge of dialogue with France’s overseas territories was convicted Friday and fined. Prosecutors had asked for former prefect Paul Girot de Langlade to be fined 5,000 euros after he made racist comments last summer at Paris’s Orly airport.

The case was brought against Girot de Langlade by three antiracist groups, including the Mrap, Licra and SOS Racisme.

He was accused by airport employees of insulting a black airport security employee last July when he was coming back from the French Indian Ocean department of La Reunion.

He was removed from his position as prefect in September.
