French unemployment stands at around 10 per cent nationwide. But in these times of economic malaise, it's the population of France's suburbs, the banlieux, that's hardest hit . Estimates range from 33 per cent unemployment to a staggering 44 per cent among the youngest people able to work. A combination of poverty, lack of education and discrimination has led to the current situation.
