Benoît Piet reported his wife Adeline went missing in 2006, initially explaining her disappearance to police by saying she wanted a change of scenery.

A massive search ensued in their home village of La Gouesniere, near Saint-Malo on the coast of Brittany in north-west France.

When brought in for questioning two years after the disappearance, Piet admitted to police he had buried his wife in the garden, later exhuming her to burn the remains on the barbecue.

Since then, Piet has consistently denied murdering his wife.

He initially claimed she committed suicide, then said unknown attackers killed her and threatened their children if Piet were to speak of the murder.

Piet eventually admitted his wife died during a drunken domestic dispute but stopped short of saying he himself killed her.

The couple were in the process of getting divorced at the time of the death.

The trial opens Tuesday. The verdict is expected Friday.
