Paris police catch cake burglar

French police have caught a serial burglar who preyed on old people, feeding them drugged cake to put them to sleep while he stole their credit cards. The 64-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday evening in Levallois-Perret, north-west of Paris.

He is accused of around 20 robberies dating back to 2009, committed mainly in the Montreuil, Bagnolet and Romainville suburbs of Paris.

The modus operandi was the same in each case: the man approached an elderly victim in the street, gained their confidence and persuaded them to allow him into their home.

Once there, he offered them cake and drinks spiked with sleeping pills. While his victims slept, he used their bank cards to withdraw cash from their accounts.

The suspect was caught after allegedly robbing a 70-year-old in Lilas, north-east of Paris.
