The soldier who died was a corporal with the 2nd Marine Infantry Regiment, and the injured were also marines.

A statement from the French presidency said that the president had learned the news “with much sadness”, but expressed “France’s determination to continue to work with the International Security Assistance Force” (Isaf) in Afghanistan.

About 4,000 French soldiers are deployed under Nato command with Isaf in Afghanistan in the war against Taliban insurgents.
