L'Oréal heiress Bettencourt unfit to run own affairs, doctors say

In France, doctors say that the country’s richest woman, Liliane Bettencourt should be placed under guardianship in the light of her physical and mental state. The L’Oréal heiress has been fighting a long legal battle with her daughter over how she uses her immense wealth.

Bettencourt’s fortune, inherited from her late husband, is estimated at around 15 billion euros.

The authors of the report on her health says they did not examine her personally but had access to her medical records.

Their conclusions are clear. The doctors allege that Bettencourt suffers from a brain disease that has made her unfit to run her own affairs.

Their report also recommends that Bettencourt be placed under an enhanced legal guardianship, which would allow a court-appointed guardian to oversee her spending.

Bettencourt is currently fighting a legal battle with her daughter, Francoise Bettencourt-Meyers, who says that people close to her mother are taking advange of her.

The ongoing L'Oréal family feud hit headlines last year with reports accusing members of President Nicolas Sarkozy's party of receiving illegal funds to finance political campaigns.
