French police said Tuesday they are hunting a man in his 40s who has held up a series of bakeries in Paris suburbs to steal croissants and other pastries.

Five bakery robberies have been reported since 9 December in western suburbs, police said, each time using the same modus operandi.

After ordering his pains au chocolat, brioches, chaussons aux pommes and other French baking delights, the man pulls out what appears to be a fake revolver, points it at the person behind the counter and leaves without paying.

No one has been injured in the robberies and in each case the value of the stolen goods has been low, at between eight and 20 euros.
