Officers led him away from his girlfriend’s home in Six Fours in the South of France at 7 am this morning, and he is now in police custody.

Claude Couty, who held a senior post at PIP is also in custody, and police are now searching both houses.

Philippe Courtois, the lawyer for an association representing women with PIP implants, welcomed the detention of Jean-Claude Mas, remarking that it was long overdue, and that he could easily have left the country before today’s arrest.

Marseilles prosecutor Jacques Dallest hinted that valuable works of art at his girlfriend’s home could be seized as part of the enquiries.

Jean-Claude Mas is now at the centre of two separate investigations: in October criminal proceedings began following a preliminary enquiry into accusations of fraudulent practices at his company.

Today’s arrest is part of the investigations led by a Marseilles magistrate into allegations of manslaughter and unintentional injury.

The case is likely to drag on for many years, with many different experts being called to give evidence in each individual case.
