French police used a Taser on a pig running wild in the streets of a town near Paris on Wednesday, the Le Parisien paper reports.

Summoned to stop the pig rampaging through the streets of Flins-sur-Seine near Paris, police resorted to the use of a Taser electronic stun-gun, the paper's website reports.

How it escaped remains a mystery.

The use of Tasers by French police has been criticised by left-wing and human rights activists, who claim that the weapon can be dangerous. A Malian immigrant died after police used a Taser on him in Colombes, also near Paris, in 2010, although an autopsy said he may have died of asphyxiation.

The pig appears to have suffered no harm and was returned to its owner on Wednesday evening.

Police have not pressed charges.
