Speaking French a liability in US politics?

Today, Florida sees the fourth vote in the US Republican Party primaries. Frontrunner Mitt Romney faces a challenge from former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, who positions himself further to the right. Gingrich frequently highlights the fact that Romney speaks French...because in US politics, speaking French is seen as a bad thing.
