French presidential frontrunner François Hollande was attacked by a woman wielding a flour- bomb while delivering a speech about housing problems in the capital on Wednesday.

The Socialist candidate was left covered in white powder after the attack and the woman forcibly removed from the room.

Hollande played down the incident as “an occupational hazard” and said he would not be reviewing his security arrangements

The woman, Claire Seguin, aged-45, said she carried out the attack as she had no money left because housing laws were not being applied. She has been taken into police custody for carrying out a violent act.

Meanwhile, the campaign director for Green Party presidential candidate,Eva Joly, says she has received a number of threats in the mail over the past few weeks including a letter containing a bullet.

“We often receive mail from people linked to the extreme-right, very nationalistic,” Stéphane Sitbon-Gomez explained. “These are the downsides of running a campaign.”

Security for the Joly was recently stepped-up. She will now have police protection for the duration of her campaign.
