"The information we have is that both arrived overnight in Lebanon. Paul Conroy is at the British embassy and in good condition. Edith Bouvier is also here in Lebanon but we have no information as to where she is exactly," the official said on Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Both Bouvier and Conroy were wounded in a rocket attack last week on a makeshift media centre in Baba Amr, a rebel stronghold in Homs, where two other Western reporters, Marie Colvin and Remi Ochlik, were killed.

News of Conroy and Bouvier’s dramatic escape came as UN human rights chief Navi Pillay called for an immediate ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid in to the violence-torn regions of Syria.

William Tarif of international activist group Avaaz said the organisation co ordinated Conroy’s rescue from the battered city in central Syria and across the border.

A Lebanese activist said Conroy had been smuggled through an illegal crossing into Lebanon overnight.
